Iâm not sure when I finally fell asleep, but I wake up feeling horrible. I have a crick in my neck and my arm is numb. I drag myself downstairs, and to my relief the dining room is empty. I donât have the bandwidth to deal with any other surprises Dad or Dadi might have in store.
Iâm taking my last sip of coffee, trying not to move my neck and generally bemoaning my current state.
âGood morning.â
I whip my head around at the sound of Sufiyaâs voice. âOwwww.â My eyes tear up from the pain in my neck.
Sufiya hurries to my side, looking alarmed. âWhat happened? Are you okay?â
âI slept funny, thatâs all,â I say while simultaneously rubbing my neck.
âHere, let me.â Sufiya digs around in her purse and produces a tiny container. She takes off the lid and dips her finger in the contents. âTiger balm,â she announces, placing her hands gently on my neck. As she begins to massage it, I let out a groan because it feels incredible.
âWow, youâre very good at this,â I say. My cheeks are burning as I suppress another groan because Iâm pretty sure this whole scenario is quickly becoming extremely awkward. And the last thing I want is to make her uncomfortable.
âI do this for Dadima all the time,â she says, really digging in.
Awesome. Now she thinks Iâm just like my seventy-five-year-old grandmother.
âI think Iâm good, thank you. It feels so much better now.â
She stops and looks at me closely. âAre you sure?â
âYes, thank you so much.â
âIâm just going to wash my hands and then Iâll be right back.â
âNo, thatâs okay,â I say quickly. âIâm sure you have work to do.â
She looks at me and I can tell sheâs confused by my abrupt tone. I didnât mean for the words to come out the way they did, but itâs done now.
âI donât mind â¦â She starts to leave, then seems to change her mind. âWhy did you text me last night?
âOh, Iâm sorry about that.â I study my toes intently. âI shouldnât have bothered you.â
âPlease stop saying that,â she says. âYouâre not bothering me.â
I look up at her, debating whether I should speak my mind or just let this go. But then again, Iâve never been good at letting things go.
âI, um ⦠I was just thinking that maybe youâve only been hanging out with me because Dadi asked you to.â There. I said it, and now Iâm watching her expression closely to see if Iâm right.
But sheâs smiling at me. Thatâs a good sign. Or maybe sheâs going to tell me that she was only doing her job. For the love of god, say something.
âYouâre funny,â she says, coming back toward me. âI have been hanging around because Dadima asked me to.â
I knew it. My cheeks are on fire again because now she knows Iâve been thinking about her and she probably feels sorry for me.
âWell, Iââ
âBut thatâs not the only reason.â She has this look in her eyes that I canât describe, but it makes me all warm inside.
